Which Size Do I Need?
As a starting point, a small stick should do any average sized house/unit. Medium or large sticks offer better value for money because whatever you don't burn can be relit next time. The rate at which you go through your smudge stick depends on how thoroughly you cleanse, your speed, and how much you wave/blow the stick.
About White Sage
White Sage is highly valued as a ceremonial and ritualistic plant and is deemed to have great spiritual and emotional cleansing properties. Native traditions relate that wherever sage is used, no evil influences may enter. The sacred ritual of purifying with smoke (smudging) comes from many indigenous people around the world.
Smudging may be used to purify the body, aura, pets, home, offices and healing rooms - in fact, any space or item.
How to Use
- To clear your home, start by opening up all the doors and windows, as the intention is to drive out any negative energies from your spaces.
- You can simply hold the smudge stick in your hand or let it sit in a heat-proof dish/container (e.g. Abalone shell).
- Light the top end of the stick and allow it to smoulder and smoke, eventually filling the room and every nook and cranny.
- You can optionally say a simple affirmation (silently or out loud) such as "I clear away all negativity and invite positive energy into my home" or "this smoke cleanses negativity from my home and allows me to move forward in a new and positive direction".
- It doesn't matter how fast you go or in which direction, rather your intention is the key factor!
Safety: Remember to never leave things unattended and keep out of reach of children. Any unused Sage can be put out and reused next time. You could also burn a bit of Palo Santo afterwards (due to its more pleasant aroma) to help reinforce the purification and cleansing process.
